Bedbugs are small, reddish-brown and like a flattened oval in shape. They are wingless and can grow to 4 or 5 mm in length and 1.5 - 3 mm in width by adulthood. They are human parasites that feed on blood while a person sleeps. Being nocturnal, they can be difficult to locate, but the clearest sign of infestation is the itchy red sores that their bites produce. They mainly nest in bedding or sofa cushions but have also been known to hide in suitcases, closets, clothes, and walls.
Symptoms of bedbug bites include itchiiness, psychological trauma and possible allergic reactions. Although they feed on blood, there is no evidence that they can spread blood-borne diseases from on human to another.
The clearest sign of a bedbug infestation is the large, itchy red sores that their bite produces. Bedbugs can also leave small blood marks on sheets, and tiny traces of feces in bedding.
Bedbugs are extremely resistant to extreme cold, heat and dryness, and are also developing resistance to many pest control chemicals. If you suspect that you have a bedbug infestation, call a professional as soon as possible. You should also advise your child's school, and your workplace that you have had an infestation in order to help stem teh spread of the parasites.
