Pharaoh ants are tiny, measuring about 2 mm in length. It is not certain where they originate from, but they are now found in nearly all countries and have become a major pest in buildings such as hospitals, retirement homes, apartment buildings, grocery stores, and nearly all other kinds of building complexes. They are especially threatening in hospitals as they can cause infections in patients, and can interfere with equipment such as driplines, instruments, and electronics.
How to Identify a Pharaoh Ant Infestation
Pharaoh ants can mainly be identified by their size and colour: approximately 2mm long with a yellow or reddish-brown body. Their abdomen (hind portion of the body) is darker in colour. If you suspect that you might have a pharaoh ant infestation, call a professional pest control expert immediately.
Dealing with a Pharaoh Ant Infestation
Pharaoh ants are unicolonial, meaning that many colonies can establish themselves in a building without being hostile to each other. They are very difficult to eliminate because separate colonies can unite to strengthen themselves during extermination efforts, then repopulate afterwards. If you suspect that you have a pharaoh ant infestation, call a professional exterminator right away.
