Indian Meal Moth
Indian Meal Moths can infest a wide range of dried foods; including flour, cereal, rice, spices, dried fruits, and nuts. They are not known to carry diseases but can cause damage to stored foods.
How to Identify an Indian Meal Moth Infestation
Indian Meal Moths are 8-10mm and grey in colour, with a lighter strip at the base of their wings. These moths create a silk cocoon when feeding, so the presence of stick fibrous material found in foodstuffs is also an indicator of their presence.
Dealing with a Meal Moth Infestation
First, throw away any infested food products and ensure that remaining food products are stored in sealed containers. Meal moths can be very difficult to eradicate, so it is recommended that you call a professional. Although pheromone traps are an effective way remove adult males, larvae can travel long distances. This means that treatments may be required in many places outside of the infested area.
