Fleas

Fleas are small parasites that usually live in the fur or bedding of pets, but have also been known to attack humans and wild animals such as rats. Their bite can be irritating, and they can also spread disease from animals to humans.

How to Identify a Flea Infestation

Human flea bites can be identified by a single bite mark surrounded by an irritated pink area. They can be distinguished from spider-bites (which show two marks and are flat) unlike mosquito or bedbug bites which produce a raised mound. In pet fur, look for tiny pieces of black debris; these are faeces and clotted blood.

Dealing with a Flea Infestation

Flea control requires an initial insecticide treatment followed by pet treatment, cleaning of pet bedding and follow-up with frequent thorough vacuuming. Be sure to clean pet-bedding with soapy water, and always discard vacuum bags after use.
