Cockroaches are large insects that can infest homes, hospitals or any other building where food might be stored. Pest species of cockroaches can range in size from 15 – 30 mm in length. They can spread bacteria, and are known to use communicate with each other through pheromones so a single cockroach can quickly signal others about locations of food and shelter resulting in swarming behaviour. They are very hardy insects that can survive long periods without food, water or oxygen and can weather extreme temperatures.
How to Identify a Cockroach Infestation
Cockroaches can be identified on sight. They are reddish-brown in colour and have the following size ranges by species:
- American Cockroach: 30 mm in length
- German and Asian Cockroaches: 15 mm in length
- Oriental Cockroach: 25 mm in length
Cockroaches are active in darkness and will flee light, except for the Asian cockroach which is attracted to light.
Dealing with a Cockroach Infestation
The first step in cockroach control is cleanliness. Ensure that all food products are stored in sealed containers, dispose of garbage and wash dirty dishes regularly.
